Dorothy Pecina is a well-known artist and teacher. Born in New Jersey, she and her family moved to Boulder County in 1970. As she was growing up in Elizabeth, she found her enjoyment in drawing, sketching and painting. While in high school she crammed as much art into her electives as she possibly could. She taught first grade at Louisville Elementary School and included art and crafts as possible to enhance her lessons.
After retiring, she began painting again, in earnest; taking lessons from Patty Andre and Jake Gaedtke. As an artist, Pecina works by capturing the essence of what she is creating. Interpreting what she sees and feels is paramount in developing the subject matter. Her goal, through the use of composition, color, value, and texture is to help the viewer “walk” into the painting and experience a similar feeling and excitement that inspired her to preserve the image on canvas. Her inspiration comes from living in Colorado and the beautiful Mountains, rivers and farmland that are part of her every day life.
Currently Pecina is teaching weekly oil painting classes at Longmont Free University and for the City of Longmont and she also teaches several weekly classes at her studio. She is a member and past vice president of the Louisville Art Association and a member of the Longmont Council for the Arts, Muse Gallery, and a member of the Longmont Artists’ Guild. During the major renovation of the Louisville Center for the Art Pecina was a member of the Restoration Steering Committee.
Pecina was the recipient of the Judges Award at the Boulder Art Association and Longmont Artists’ Guild 2005 Members Show and an award for third place for the 2006 Members show. Each year, the city of Longmont sponsors THE RHYTHM ON THE RIVER. This is a festival that spotlights the arts and is great fun for the entire family. Pecina was commissioned to do the poster for the 2002 festival.
Her works can be seen at the Muse Gallery, Deja Brew, Longmont, The East Boulder County Studio Tour in May and the Longmont Studio Tour in September. You are welcome to visit Pecina’s studio or give her a call if you have any questions. Please visit her web site: dotpecinaoils.com.
Pecina paintings can be found in private collections throughout the United States, England and Ireland.
