Enjoying Cezanne's Favorite Haunt

Patricia Montgomery

I have studied art my entire adult life. My life in art resembles the creation of a stalactite-it has developed slowly over time, drip by drip.

I lived in New York where I began my lifelong love of museums, the display and study of paintings, and of fine art in general. I was fortunate to find an accomplished artist there who taught me the basics and much more. I started my study of art in earnest, never dreaming that it would become my lifelong avocation.

It is difficult to articulate my feelings concerning my art. My art is not a product of my conscious mind, rather it emanates from a source deep within. I am driven to capture the quality of light as it plays on my subject matter. I strive to depict a sense of place, emotion, color and/or mood. I seek to evoke an emotional response in the viewer. I prefer plein air painting as I am forced to focus all my resources, past experiences, and knowledge each time I address a blank canvas or sheet of paper. Painting outdoors forces me to work rapidly and loosely while capturing the elements of time and place.

Prior to moving to Colorado in the 1980’s, I had shown my work occasionally. In Colorado I began to focus on my art; studying with many local and national artists. I traveled often, primarily painting on location in the U.S. and Europe.

I moved to Texas in 1998 to be with my elderly mother. While there, I began to study oil painting with Kim English, Michael Workman, and Charles Grupe among others. I exhibited my work and was active in the Central Texas art community. I returned to Colorado after the death of my mother and now reside in Longmont where I am able to enjoy time with my children and grandchildren.

Most recently, I spent ten days painting on location in the Cinque Terre region of Italy under the tutelage of Lesley Rich, a noted California artist.
