Falling Gingko - Fiber
Nanci McCutcheon grew up surrounded by a kaleidoscope of fabric, color, and pattern. Her earliest artistic influence came from her family: a mother who sewed and created gorgeous gardens, older siblings who amused themselves by drawing cartoons – art was a part of daily life. As a child, Nanci designed new clothes for her paper dolls, dreaming even then of someday becoming a fashion designer. Nanci briefly followed that dream when she studied apparel design at New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology, but finally pursued other career options, while still designing and sewing many of her own clothes.
Over the years, Nanci explored many different art forms including painting, photography, and collage, but always returned to her first love – fabric. She took a quilting class in 1982 and was immediately drawn to the seemingly endless possibilities presented by this art form; quilting became her catalyst for self-expression. Initially her focus was on traditional quilt making, but Nanci gradually began to appreciate the freedom afforded by adopting more contemporary designs and construction methods. Her solid background in clothing construction and traditional quilt making techniques, as well as her interest in other media, has combined to bring her to a very exciting place in her current work.
Nanci’s recent focus is on art quilts, and she knows her quilt making will continue to evolve as she is exposed to new influences, ideas, and life experiences. Her art quilts have been exhibited nationally, and her art quilting classes have been very popular in local quilt shops.
